Having decided to renovate our kitchen, working with someone who could make our dream a reality was paramount in the process. We were very comfortable with Wayne Sage of Harwood Design Builders when we met to discuss the project.

While we already had detailed construction drawings, many things changed during the construction process. The adaptability of Harwood's staff to the reality of our project was very much appreciated. Not only did Harwood do a fantastic job completing the work, they had great suggestions for improvements during our renovation. Some of these changes were:

• recessing a ceiling beam into the existing 2nd floor joists
• amending the placement of the second ceiling beam, the result of the chimney removal
• extending the dropped ceiling (necessary to clad the second beam) across the entire length of that side of the room, creating a clean visual line
• for our back hall closet we needed maximum storage (wife's needs) and access to the basement for large items (husband's needs). Harwood's carpenter suggested angling the corner of the closet. A GREAT idea that satisfied BOTH our needs!
• the installation of a hidden shoe shelf in the back entrance, using an under-utilized crawlspace

These suggestions and adaptations took a great construction plan and made it special!

During construction, many of our existing windows, once exposed, revealed wet and rotten wood beneath them. Rather than deferring us to next year, Harwood was able to expertly repair the damage and re-side the entire house immediately. They also suggested cladding the existing brick mold with metal, eliminating the need to scrape and repaint every few years. What a GREAT idea!

Harwood's construction and carpentry staff have an outstanding work ethic and attention to detail. Through the entire process, we felt they put the same level of care into our home as they would into their own. Their skills are very solid, and so is the construction of our kitchen addition.

We can honestly say that Harwood Design Builders gave us a kitchen addition that exceeded our lofty dreams!

Here we are nearing the end of phase three in our renovation project. It has been a long and winding road but I need to tell you how pleased we are with the workmanship and service that Harwood Design has delivered.

Renovations always take longer than expected and they invariably unearth unexpected surprises, seldom pleasant ones.

Tony, and Jeff, and you yourself were unfailingly pleasant and helpful through it all. Tony’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in the beautiful craftsmanship of the cabinetry. Jeff is amazing in the number of skills he brings to the job and his willingness to tackle any problem. Most appreciated also is the fact that they cleaned up every trace of mess each night before they went home. This is a really big deal when one is living in the renovation. We also very much appreciated the way you accounted for the expenses and billing. It was very easy to follow and understand.

Our finished areas are beautiful and we are very pleased. More important, we know that underneath the pretty surfaces the construction is solid and the sins of the past have been uncovered and corrected.

Thank you for the special effort you made to make our house livable throughout the entire process. Tell Tony and Jeff thanks from us. We are going to miss them.

Like most people, I am most motivated to follow up on a job when something is not quite right. On this occasion however, I was so impressed by the professionalism of you and your entire team that I just had to comment.

Please thank your crew for the numerous occasions that they either brought up their own ideas during construction for a better design, or, when the remote nature of the job site made consultation impractical, took the risk of implementing an improvement of design because they knew it was the "right way." Dedication to top-notch quality has all but disappeared in our province, so it was a real treat to be on the receiving end of this vanishing experience.

I would like to thank you for a job well done. Not only was the quality of the work of a high standard but we appreciated how the whole project was run. It started with our doodle of what we wanted: From the architect who drew up the plans to Jeff who made suggestions along the way, the rough idea progressed in consultation with Mary-Jo and I.

Hardwood Design Builders constructed a box ceiling, with 10 perimeter spot lights, in our family room, and the result has been fantastic. The work was done quickly and was of the highest quality. All the subcontractors were friendly, capable and completely trustworthy people. Work areas were meticulously covered with plastic sheeting, and the house was left spotlessly when the crew left the site. Wayne Sage, the owner, is a lovely and good-humored man, who responded promptly and patiently to our anxious questions and concerns. ...Wayne was the contractor who removed and rebuilt the stairs in our 1940's home. He had drawings to follow, but also had sound advice on the best scenario for our remodeling. As we decided to be our head contractors, Wayne was gracious to sit and discuss our project and educate us on the process and possible resources available. Our renovation included more than the stairs Wayne and his tradesmen worked on. Wayne was professional, punctual and courteous. He showed genuine interest by dropping in to see what could be done with the resources he had available at given times.

Qualities that we found in Wayne and his business are: organized, efficient, positive, realistic, up front, knowledgeable. ...you do not need overkill with a big builder. I will recommend Harwood Design Builders Ltd. They are a smaller firm but very familiar with residential work, which is all this person did when he resided in British Columbia prior to relocating to Winnipeg and working for a period of time with Habitat for Humanity as their construction manager. I know this person personally and he has a good track record plus ethics and morals.
