Perhaps one of the most crucial decisions to make when deciding to do a home renovation is which company to choose to get the job done. Several things can factor into this decision, including the size of the renovation, the style of your home and of course, the budget.
The first step in making this decision is to compile a list of renovators. Get recommendations from friends, do some research online or visit home shows. Once you put together a list of possible renovators, you can begin to narrow the field down based prior experience, references and who can do the work to fit your budget.
There are many important questions that need to be asked of a prospective renovator before committing them to your project. Make sure to get a background on their company including how long they have been in business, how many employees they have and what their current workload is like to ensure you project will be a priority.
Make sure the renovator you decide to work with is willing to put everything into writing, including a detailed description of the work, timeline, payment schedule and project cost. This is extremely important in ensuring you are protected in case there is any dispute in the future. Also, be very wary of a renovator who wants to work for cash. This leaves the homeowner with no legal protection or paper trail. Although financially it may appear to be the smarter choice, it is a huge risk that could end up costing you big in the end.
